Product Description

Our Black point-of-lay (POL) Silkie hens are now available to reserve - and these hens are fully vaccinated and nearly ready to start laying, typically beginning at 24 weeks of age. With their striking black plumage and calm nature, they are perfect for small bantam flocks.

For a smoother transition when bringing new hens home, we highly recommend getting a poultry drink, something similar to this, (available on Amazon - or your local pet shop), when purchasing pure-breed chickens. Moving to a new home and flock can be stressful, and using a drink like this can make a real difference in helping them settle in by giving them a boost of energy and vitamins.

What We Offer

  • Breed: Black Silkie – loved for their fluffy feathers, friendly disposition, and broodiness.
  • Point-of-Lay Hens: fully vaccinated, and ready to join your flock.
  • Temperament: Docile and gentle, making them ideal for bantam-only setups.

Why Choose Black Silkie Hens?

  • Egg Production: While Silkies lay fewer eggs than hybrids, their small, creamy eggs are perfect for household use.
  • Broodiness: Silkies are renowned for their strong maternal instincts and ability to hatch eggs from other poultry breeds.
  • Aesthetic Appeal: Their rich black plumage and fluffy crests add beauty and character to any flock.

Care Instructions for Black Silkie Hens

  • Housing Requirements: Provide dry, draught-free coops with low perches, as Silkies have limited flying ability. Their feathering is not waterproof, so sheltered, dry conditions are essential.
  • Outdoor Tolerance: Silkies tolerate cold but dislike wet conditions. Ensure outdoor areas are well-drained and covered to protect them from rain.
  • Feeding: Silkies can remain on growers' pellets until 18 weeks, then transition to layers' pellets as they approach laying age. Supplement with fresh greens and treats in moderation.

Important Information

  • Flock Compatibility: Silkies thrive in small bantam flocks and are not suitable for mixing with hybrid hens, as their gentle nature makes them prone to bullying.
  • Vaccination: All hens are fully vaccinated for a healthy start in your flock.
  • Group Size: For social well-being, we recommend keeping Silkies in groups of at least three or more.
  • Collection: Black Silkie hens are available for collect now.
